Gary Brent

Executive Chairman, Chief Strategist and Co-Founder

Gary brings over 40 years of experience in the Financial Services sector.

As Executive Chairman, Chief Strategist and Co-Founder of HighView Financial Group, he is actively engaged in the following areas:

  • The development of HighView’s business strategy and value proposition
  • The architecture of goals based portfolio solutions
  • The design of best counseling and stewardship practices
  • The delivery of counseling and stewardship to key clients of the firm
  • The governance of the business as Director & Chairman of the Board of Directors

His extensive experience in the financial services sector uniquely equip him to play an important leadership role in evolving the client centric value proposition which enables HighView to excel in the delivery of a truly fiduciary-based Outsourced Chief Investment Officer service, housed within a collaborative Virtual Family Office structure.

Prior to co-founding HighView, Gary was Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of RBC Global Private Banking, which included all the groups servicing the discretionary needs of RBC’s global high net worth client base: the Domestic Private Bank, the International Private Bank, Royal Trust, and RBC Private Counsel. He also held the position of President and CEO of RBC Private Counsel.

Before joining RBC, he had the good fortune to hold the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of CT Investment Management Group, the wealth management division of Canada Trust. This business included the mutual fund group, the trust business, the investment counsel business and the investment management group. The leading edge work, that the CT IMG team undertook, served to set Canada Trust apart, from its competitors, as a provider of client-centric, objective, open-architecture solutions that aligned with their clients’ life journeys.

Gary developed his investment counseling skills during the outstanding years at TAL Private Management, the private client division of TAL Global asset Management. He moved to Canada Trust after the TAL sale to CIBC.

In the years leading up to the creation of HighView, Gary played an instrumental role in the development of a unique Global Wealth Management MBA, at Simon Fraser University. He helped establish and recruit their industry-based Advisory Board, and was Executive-in-Residence for the program. His most interesting role, however, was the opportunity to spend time with the students in discussing industry practices and trends. He and his wife, Deborah, were very pleased to provide for the Brent Scholarship, awarded annually to a very deserving student.

These career experiences have all contributed to the evolution of a set of philosophies and guiding principles, for HighView, that capture a client first mind-set grounded on a foundation of: objectivity, transparency and collaboration.

Gary and his wife, Deborah, have 4 children and five beautiful grand-daughters. They make their home in Burlington, Ontario.
